Patagonian program of Argentine birds
Installed through an agreement with Ea. Cerro Bayo. Located in the historic Laguna del Islote (or del Medio) at 1100 meters above sea level in one of the highest parts of the Strobel Lake plateau. This lagoon was historically one of the most important for the Hooded Grebe, reaching more than 1000 individuals in the 1980s, and a site of great concentration of birds. During the 2000s it was planted with rainbow trout, so the conditions of this water body changed. Since 2010, Project Hooded Grebe has monitored and started working on the management of the salmonids of the Strobel Plateau with special emphasis on this one. With the support of Estancia Cerro Bayo, the Santa Cruz provincial road system, the Santa Cruz Secretary of the Environment and the Sella family, we were able to build a refuge next to this large lagoon. Thanks to this we will be able to work much more intensively, safely and comfortably in one of the most remote lagoons of Hooded Grebe.
