Estancia La Angostura Base

Patagonian program of Argentine birds

La Angostura Ea. La Angostura, located in the productive Rio Chico valley, is famous for being the site of the rediscovery of the Redfish. It is also home to the largest populations of this species. This productive ranch, with cattle raising and ecotourism, is located in an important area for bird conservation. In addition, it is in a strategic point for the development of the work of Project Hooded Grebe and the Patagonia Program in general, as it is located at the base of the Strobel Lake plateau, near Gobernador Gregores, making it a strategic intermediate point from the EBJMB and El Chaltén, and as a base for climbing to the Mauricio Rumboll refuge. Since 2010 we have worked in collaboration with María and Tonchi, being an almost obligatory stopping place. Since 2022 the Patagonia Program has a permanent base, with permanent technical staff and space to house volunteers, researchers and/or collaborators. It is there where the Patagonia Program’s Livestock Protection Dogs program is developed.

Target

Since 2021, the Patagonia Program (thanks to a collaborative work with the landowners) has maintained a permanent presence at Estancia La Angostura. There it uses the housing and logistical facilities as an operational base for the development of research and management actions in the central west of Santa Cruz. The objective of the base is to provide facilities and resources (human and logistical) to complement the “Juan Mazar Barnett” Biological Station and the Patagonia Program’s network of refuges in the region (e.g. “Mauricio Rumboll” Refuge on the Strobel Plateau). The database is available to researchers associated with the Program and eventually to collaborations with third parties.

Reservations

Availability: All year round, reservation and confirmation required.
Maximum length of stay: To be defined according to space availability
Cost of stay: Free for Argentine researchers.
Important: Please note that if your research project requires it, you must also present the approved research permits from the Provincial Agrarian Council and/or the National Parks Administration -Southern Patagonia Regional Directorate-, as appropriate (both are valid for one year). Persons staying and/or working at the station will be required to have personal accident insurance or ART certificate (in case of CONICET personnel or other state units).
